Press Release: March 1, 2010
We are pleased to announce that Koinonia has been selected for a Community Investment Grant through Community Foundation for Northern Virginia. In the field of Poverty Relief, Koinonia has been awarded $7,500 to provide additional funding for our Emergency Relief Services, which includes client assistance with rent and utilities.
Community Foundation for Northern Virginia's Director of Grants, Lesley MacDonald, stated in his award letter, "We were very impressed with your application and with the work you are doing to benefit the community." In 2009, Koinonia had 1,860 client visits, our food pantry gave away 77,100 lbs of food, cleaning and personal hygiene products, and we enrolled 440 children in our school-aged programs. The needs of our community have increased. Our community has been hard-hit with job loss, increased medical needs, and increased demands on the family support system. Therefore, Koinonia has been experiencing an increase in demand for services.
Koinonia has been fully supported by the community for over 40 years! Koinonia's Executive Director, Amy Lopez, stated, "Because of our local community, we have been able to provide much needed help to our neighbors in need. The Community Investment Grant will further enable us to continue our Emergency Relief Services for people in our community who need it most."
